You are the light of the world

Oh, how great is Your goodness, which you have laid up for those who fear, revere, and worship You, goodness which You have wrought for those who trust and take refuge in You before the sons of men. ~Psalm 31:19 (AMP)

Psalm 31:19 tells us of God's great goodness toward those who trust and take refuge in Him before the “sons of men”.  The whole world is watching those who profess to believe in the Lord.  They need to see something different than what the world has to offer. Granted the world has quite a variety of deceptions and half-truths but believers are admonished to trust in God and God alone and our promise from the Lord is that everyone watching will see God pour His goodness on us as we make Him our refuge and rest in Him as He demonstrates His great love toward us.  If God wasn't good to us the world might wonder what our faith was really all about.  Unbelievers want proof that God loves us.  They want to see that He is working in our lives every day, so they are able to come to believe and know Him for themselves.  People in our homes, in our workplaces and in our communities see us going through some of the same difficult circumstance they have but what distinguishes believers in Christ from those who do not know Him is our faith in God’s ultimate love, grace and mercy.  It doesn’t matter what things looks like around us, we should know in our heart of hearts that God is on the throne and no matter what valley we find ourselves in, we should expect that God is going to bring us through and turn it for our good.  That kind of confidence is attractive compared to what this world has to offer.

Jesus didn't go around crying "Oh I'm just a poor sinner".  He went around professing the good news of God’s great love toward mankind with faith and many miracles followed.  Then He told us in John 14:12 “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”  (NIV)  Jesus said that foxes have dens and birds have nests but He had no place to lay His head while He was here!  Despite Jesus’ circumstances and in the midst of great opposition He was still getting God’s will done in His daily walk.  What great things have you been doing lately in Jesus' name?  Have you prayed for your neighbor?  Have you been to the mountain alone to intercede for your community?   How about your leaders...those whom God has put in positions of authority over you…your bosses, your congressmen, your president?  Have you asked for provision so that you were able to meet the needs of others?  To be used by God we must learn to live our faith openly in front of those around us with confidence that the fiery darts that are coming against us are being thwarted by our faith in God's great love towards us.  Only then will they see what a difference a relationship with Him can make.  Our calling as believers is to be a light to the world; Jesus said in Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” (NIV)  We need to tell people about the prayers God is answering and the miracles happening in our lives every day.  That is what keeps us shining and gives the world some flavor!

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?" ~Matthew 5:13a (NIV)

What great things have you been doing lately in Jesus' name?
