What directs your behavior?

But we Christians have no veil over our faces; we can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like Him. ~2 Corinthians 3:1 (TLB)

Those who belong to the Lord are being transformed into His image.  The bible teaches we are becoming more like Him every day.  For some of us this may seem like a very slow process, but we can count on God’s word that it is happening.  It is happening in direct correlation to the Spirit of the Lord working in us.  When the Holy Spirit is in control, He can help us become all God created us to be.  He can lead us to every place the Lord wants us to go.  He can give us revelation and understanding that brings God’s wisdom into every area of our lives.  As we live and move and have our being in Him, we are able to live a life of integrity, walk in victory and most importantly we are able to lead others to Christ.  Jesus said in Matthew 28:18-20 go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (NIV) Allowing the Holy Spirit to work within us to direct our behavior is the only way we will ever be able to fulfill the Lord’s great commission for our lives.  We have to make the Lord’s priorities our own priorities!

What would your life look like if for one day Jesus came to live in your shoes, waking up in your bed, to your alarm, to your responsibilities, to your concerns?   Say He doesn’t come to make any changes to your circumstances or problems, only your priorities.  When our priorities line up with God’s priorities it can be summed up with one word…love.  God is love, so to transform us into the image of His Son, we must become love.  What would change in your life today if every thought, every word, and every action was governed by love for God and others?   When the religious rulers of Jesus’ day questioned Him regarding the most important law, He responded in Matthew 40:37-40 saying, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (NIV) It has been said that all obedience begins in the affections and love is the supreme affection.  Love overcomes anything and everything.  We must remember that our emotions play a large role in directing our behavior.  We are free moral agents, we can operate out of hate, fear, anger or jealousy, and many people do.  We run across that kind of brokenness every day.  But Jesus says in John 13:35 “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (NASB)  Jesus came to be an example for us as to how to live out our lives.  He was led by the Holy Spirit, and He walked in love, and He expects those of us who are His disciples to do the same.   Who or what directs your behavior?  Take an inventory of what motivates your conversations and steps today.  If find yourself in a situation where your affections go astray and you have a hard time walking in love remember Romans 5:5 “God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.” (BSB) Let the Holy Spirit take the lead and you will be walking in tandem with the Lord.

Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. ~Romans 13:10 (ESV)
