The right word at the right time is God's word

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. ~Psalm 19:14 (NIV)

How healthy would your relationships be if you consecrated your words to the Lord?  To consecrate something means to set it apart as holy…for God’s use and purposes. We have the ability to speak for a reason and just like every other ability we have, it is given to glorify God.  The psalmist in our scripture today asks the Lord to let his words be pleasing to Him.  We should do the same because we know the only way our words are going to be pleasing to God is if they are godly.  Godly words exhort, build up and encourage.  They are full of love and wisdom.  Are yours?  When you speak does it make others feel good about themselves or does it tear them down?  Godly discipline is important, but it must be godly and tempered with mercy…not exasperating!  Many people have used, or should I say abused the scripture in Ephesians 4:15 which says in part that we are to "speak the truth in love".  That scripture does not mean we can break down and discourage those who are probably already despairing!  Many have taken that scripture and used it to promote what they believe to be true, not necessarily what the word of God says.  We have to be very careful that what we believe and what we speak coincide with the word of God.  Otherwise, it is a lie.  It is a deception.  The truth about your neighbor or your brother or your spouse is that God loves them and that His heart’s desire is for them to come to Him and seek His will for their lives.  If they aren’t doing that, it is the Holy Spirit’s job to bring conviction to their hearts. When we try to do the Holy Spirit’s job, we bring condemnation into people’s lives and condemnation never attracts people to the Lord.

Solomon understood the weight of godly words telling us in Proverbs 25:11 “The right word at the right time is like precious gold set in silver.” (CEV)  Who wouldn’t want to always have the right word at the right time?  That could prevent so much strife and discord in our lives!  We really have no excuse for not having the right words because the Lord tells us in Isaiah 51:16 “I have put my words in your mouth and covered you with the shadow of my hand…” (NIV)  Have you ever asked God to give you the right words before you spoke with someone?  We can be sure that God’s words are always the right words at the right time.  His word is compared to a limitless treasure.  When we speak God’s words, they carry the weight of His power.  He tells us in Isaiah 55:11 “so is my word that goes out from my mouth:  It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (NIV)   Scripture teaches the spoken word of God is a sword for the believer in our battles with the enemy.   When we agree and decree God’s word, speaking it over ourselves, others, this world, our lives and our future, power is released, and that word will not return void.  It will prosper in this earth.  It's only when our words line up with God's words that we will overcome in every situation.  Let your words be pleasing to the Lord by allowing His word to have authority over yours.

Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. ~Psalm 51:15 (NIV)

Have you ever asked God to give you the right words before you spoke with someone? How did that turn out?
