I lift up my eyes to the mountains - where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. ~Psalm 121:1-2 (NIV)
Most of us have heard the old saying “if you want something done right, you better do it yourself”. Well, that is just not a scriptural statement. It sounds good and it definitely feeds our prideful nature but it’s a saying that follows the “traditions of men” and we fall into a trap when we allow that or anything to direct our steps instead of following the word of God. How many times have you looked at a daunting task with dread? How many times have you thought the road ahead was more than you could bear? How often have you tried to lean on others only to find yourself disappointed? Well, there is one who will never fail or forsake you and that is Jesus! The Psalmist writes to all God’s people saying, “My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth”. Psalm 121 was part of a collection of psalms sung by worshippers as they ascended the road to Jerusalem for the Pilgrimage festivals. They were singing praises for what God had already accomplished in their lives and in the lives of their ancestors! When was the last time you replaced your dread, fear and disappointment with a good praise song as you travelled down this road of life? It is both refreshing and rewarding, and it will send the enemy in your head packing!
We are told in James 4:7 “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (TLB) Whatever is on your plate today has sifted through the hands of God. If you are a born-again believer, you can be confident that no matter what comes your way, God is going to be with you and you will overcome! When we sing praises to God in the midst of life’s troubles and trials, we are submitting to Him. We are saying, “I know you love me, and I know you have me in the palm of your hand. You created me and this whole world and I trust you to take care of me and everything around me!” That is how we resist the devil. We replace what he is trying to tell us with praise and thanksgiving to God. When facing life’s battles and dealing with dread, fear or disappointment, we can sing our way out of the enemy’s grip. We can search the scriptures and let God speak to us and then we can move forward in joy, singing and skipping in our hearts like the happy children of God that we were created to be. No circumstance has the power to hold us down unless we let it. One of my favorite scriptures is Isaiah 54:15 where the Lord tells us “If anyone does attack you, it will not be my doing; whoever attacks you will surrender to you.” (NIV) That scripture does not say when the enemy will surrender, so I have to leave that up to God’s timing. But when the battle is raging in my mind about my health, my finances, my family and the list could go on forever…I am confident that the trouble did not come from God and the spirit behind that trouble will one day surrender. We have to make up our mind that we will endure, that having done all to stand, we will continue to stand in faith and trust God for our breakthroughs! Having that attitude will enable us to look at troubles like gnats, no matter how great or small, because one day they will not be our troubles anymore. The more you trust God, the less the enemy will be able to tempt you to fear, worry or dread anything or anyone!
The Lord will keep you from all harm—He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. ~Psalm 121:7-8 (NIV)
