Prioritize the most profitable

Updated: Jul 28, 2023

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” ~Luke 10:41 (NIV)

I tend to find myself in Martha’s shoes more than Mary’s on most days. I wake up with a list of duties and responsibilities rolling through my mind that are literally more than one person can accomplish in a day. It takes a concentrated effort to push those thoughts back and begin to give thanks to the Lord for the coming day and all He has done and all that He is going to do before my feet hit the floor. But I have learned to choose to prioritize the most profitable. I have had seasons when my life was so hectic that I did not pause and pray before I started my day and choosing to move in that direction cost me time, money, and peace, among many other things. When we take the time to give thanks it’s always going to be time well spent. That is because we are putting ourselves and our lives into perspective. You don’t give thanks to somebody you don’t appreciate, and you don’t give thanks for things you don’t appreciate. Therefore, taking the time first thing in the morning to giving thanks to God will cause you to reflect on His goodness towards you and the good things He has done for you. It will cause you to meditate on days past where He brought you through a tough time. Maybe He helped you let go of an offense or hurt. Have you ever had a conflict that the Lord healed you from? Have you ever had a hurt that after you gave it to the Lord became a situation where the Lord could fill you with His wisdom and understanding. God can make miracles of messes. He can help you see others behavior from His perspective and take away your hard heart and replace it with a heart of flesh. He can replace your unforgiveness, anger, and bitterness with forgiveness, compassion, and mercy…if you let Him. All of these things can happen just through communicating with Him!

Our encounters with God should be changing our hearts and our minds. If they are not, we need to evaluate if we are truly communicating with Him or if we are just going through the motions. When I was a little girl, I remember my grandmother saying of a woman that came to visit her “she just talks to hear herself talk”. What my grandmother meant was that the lady didn’t listen. Do you listen in your conversations? If you don’t with the people in front of you, you are probably going to have a hard time doing it with God. Listening is a skill. It is something you do on purpose. The more you work on it the better you get! Do you know how you work on listening? By being quiet and not doing all the talking! God has plenty He wants to tell you about today, tomorrow and eternity. He has thoughts and ideas that He wants to express to you to make you a stronger person, a more well-balanced person, and a more disciplined person. Do you want to hear more about how to become the best you that you can be? Then you have to communicate with Him and let Him do some talking to your heart. Give it a try today. If you missed the first thing this morning, do it on your drive to the office or when you drop the kids off at school. Make it happen! He is your very, very best friend and He will never steer you wrong. He is your supreme source for all wisdom and understanding and knowledge regarding every aspect of your life. Call to Him and then let Him change your mind by taking the time to listen to what He has to say.

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know. ~Jeremiah 33:3 (NIV)
