Overcoming Strongholds

Updated: Jul 28, 2023

For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds. ~2 Corinthians 10:4 (AMP)

A stronghold is an area in which we are held in bondage and bondage is a terrible place to be. Spiritual strongholds are wrong mindsets or incorrect ways of thinking. These strongholds occur when what we think doesn’t agree with what God thinks. We can sincerely believe something to be true and be sincerely wrong. Has that ever happened to you? Oftentimes the way we think is directly determined by what we have been told or by our past experiences. The Israelites were looking at the same giant that David was looking at, just with a completely different perspective. David saw Goliath as defying Israel which meant he was ultimately defying God. That alone would have given David the courage he needed to take on the giant, but in addition to that David had seen God move in his behalf on more than one occasion as David tended his family’s sheep. He had taken on a lion and a bear to protect what belonged to him and he knew in His heart God was not only with him and helping him to do that, but God would also protect His own too! God said He would be with us; we just have to believe His word. Having the perspective that God is with us and for us sets us above the norm. Then obtaining some experiences under our belt of God showing up big in a tough situation and making us shine will give us the confidence to face the challenges that this life brings. When God filled us with His Holy Spirit, He gave us everything we needed to be overcoming strongholds every single day for the rest of our lives here on earth!

God’s word is truth, so when we think contrary to what He says it’s not truth. We may struggle with facts, but facts are subject to change. Truth is never subject to change. As long as we believe things that are not true, we remain imprisoned by strongholds. What do you believe that isn't true today? What "word" is exalting itself against Gods word in your life? To enjoy freedom, we must learn to use God’s mighty weapons. If we learn to use God’s weapons to tear down the negative patterns of thinking in our lives, we gain a new perspective because we gain God’s perspective. We find that what seemed to be difficult can actually be done with ease because we look at the world differently. Transformation occurs when we seek God’s perspective. Praise and prayer are great weapons that we should be using daily to overcome strongholds in our lives. Praise helps us keep our mind on God, His power, and the good things that are coming our way. It is proof that we believe He can and will help us. Praise and worship can bring us to a place of complete confidence and break down strongholds because when we are praising God, we are focused on God and a single-minded focus contains a lot of power. Our prayer life contains unlimited power as well. It reflects our relationship with God and shows that we depend on Him. We are His children, and He is our Father. When we pray, we open the door for God’s help. We ask Him to free our minds and give us victory over our thought life. God answers those prayers. In fact, God is more eager to answer our prayers for help than we are to ask. Think of prayer this way: when we pray in faith, tremendous power is made available to us. Spend some time praying and praising your Heavenly Father who heals us completely in our minds, in our bodies and in our spirits!

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. ~James 5:16 (KJV)
