Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. ~John 14:12-14 (NIV)
Jesus has promised that we will do great things during our time on this earth. He even went as far as to say we would do even greater things than He did because He was going to the Father. Our relationship with Jesus Christ, who created all things, has more benefits than we will ever be able to comprehend this side of heaven. That should encourage us to spend as much time with Him as we can in His word learning exactly what it means to be saved by grace and righteous or in a right relationship with Him! The bible tells us in Romans 8:34 “Christ Jesus who died -more than that, who was raised to life – is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” (NIV) An intercessor is someone who asks for favor on behalf of another, especially someone who asks God for favor and blessing on behalf of another. That is what Jesus promised He would be doing for us after His resurrection. He said He would do “whatever” we asked in His name, and He also promised “you may ask me for anything and I will do it”. We don’t know everything Jesus asked the Father for while He was here on this earth, but we know some things. We know that He asked for provision, both for Himself and others. One of the least taught miracles that Jesus performed was the coin in the fish’s mouth for the sole purpose of paying Jesus and Peter’s taxes.
When Jesus said ask and I will do it, He was saying we should keep the communication lines open because He was going to take care of His people. We keep those communication lines open through prayer. Heaven on earth occurs when God’s people pray. God’s glory is a manifestation of His word and His will in this earth. So, when we humble ourselves and ask God in full assurance, just like Jesus did, God can and will do those things for us that we cannot do for ourselves, and it changes our world around us. He doesn’t even limit us to what to ask for, He says “anything”. If you need wisdom or understanding, if you need a car, if you need help with a troubled relationship, whatever it is you need…anything…ask. That’s the prescription. Ask in Jesus' name. We need to remember who our source is. God is not only the source of every breath we take, but He is also the source from which every other need is met whether great or small and He tells us to come boldly. So, let me ask you...what have you asked the Lord for lately? God tells us in James 4:2 "you do not have, because you do not ask God...” (NIV) I don't want to get to heaven and find out about all the wonderful blessings God had prepared for me that I was too ashamed, scared or just plain too dumb to ask for. Ask big and expect big. We serve a great big God, and He says “ask”!
