Listen for the voice of God

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. ~Romans 8:14 (ESV)

If we want to enjoy the presence of God, we have to learn to hear the voice of God.  Communion is how we come to know anybody.  We communicate and have fellowship and learn to enjoy one another’s company.  But to experience the unbelievable joy of being a child of God, we have to not only know Him, we have to be led by Him.  We have to be able to hear His voice and we have to choose to obey Him.  Scripture teaches God’s commands are not burdensome, and they aren’t, if our heart is in the right place.  Sometimes when we hear the Lord we want to run.  Say this Sunday’s sermon was on forgiveness, and you have been harboring a little bitterness because your husband forgot your birthday.  You don’t want to forgive.  You want Him to pay, or at least make it right.  But we aren’t called to forgive those who deserve our forgiveness, we are called to forgive as Christ forgave.  Can you see how important it is for your heart to be in the right place when you hear from the Lord?  We have to be ready and willing to act on whatever it is He says.  We not only have to be ready to hear the voice of God, but we also have to close our ears to the distractions around us.  Young mothers learn how to do this very quickly.  It doesn’t take long to know the difference between the cries of a baby.  We have a screaming devil around every corner trying to convince us of anything and everything that would keep us from experiencing the goodness of God.  That goodness is experienced by faith and if we aren’t listening and acting on the right words we could be backtracking!

The Lord tells us in Hebrews 12:25 “Be careful that you do not refuse to listen to the One who is speaking…” (NLT)  We might not always know why God wants us to do things a particular way, but that doesn’t matter.  What matters is that we come to know what He expects of us and then we do it.  We can’t let our enemy or even our feelings run our lives.  We have to let the Lord run our lives.  Our feelings will go up and down like a roller coaster ride.  They cannot be trusted; therefore, it is very important we learn that we cannot act on them.  Have you ever gotten angry and said something you wish you hadn't?  That happens when we act out of our emotions.  The Lord wants us to live on purpose by His Spirit and He says if we seek His will for our lives, we will come to know it, but we need to seek it with all our heart.  His will has to be the most important thing for us to do.  God didn’t bring you into His heavenly kingdom and seat you in the heavenly realm in Christ Jesus to leave you without a guide.  He promises in John 16:13 “But when the Spirit of truth comes, He will lead you into all truth.  He will not speak His own words, but He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is to come.” (NIV)  Being led by the Spirit of God means to hear and then do what He tells you to.  Whether it is through your conscience, audibly or from scripture, God is always speaking.  Listen for His voice and then follow Him, He will take you places you never dreamed of!

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. ~John 10:27 (NIV)

Do you allow God’s word to have final authority in your decision making? Has there been a time when you didn’t want to do God’s will?
