Honest to God?

Behold, You desire truth in the inner being; make me therefore to know wisdom in my inmost heart. ~Psalm 51:6 (AMPCE)

Before we can be honest with God, we have to be honest with ourselves.  We are told in Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.  Who can understand it?” (NIV)  Sometimes we know what is right but choose the wrong and to us this is sin.  That is because we have double crossed the Holy Spirit within us whose job is to guide us away from sin and self-destruction and toward conforming to the image of Jesus Christ.  The Lord tells us in James 4:17 “So any person who knows what is right to do but does not do it, to him it is sin.” (AMPCE)  The Lord says we all sin and “fall short”. That is why Jesus came.  But we do not have to wallow in our sin.  God says He desires truth in the inner being.  That is way down in your spirit, past your flesh and past your soul.  Your spirit is where your responses to life are supposed to come out of and a firm grasp of the truth of God’s word is imperative.  If you are a believer, then the Holy Spirit has taken up residence in your heart and He reveals to you the truth about your thoughts and actions, whether they are pleasing to God or not. One of the first things we learn as a new Christian is that you cannot get away from the Holy Spirit.  Others might not know everything we think or do but God does, and He doesn’t let up when it comes to changing our way of thinking to His way of thinking.

If you want to experience the freedom from bondage that Jesus preached, you must give way to God.  You must let Him have His way in your heart and let go of those thoughts and actions that keep you in chains.  You know what those thoughts and actions are.  You know when someone offends you how the Lord expects you to act.  That offense can easily be them not doing things the way you want them to.  But that does not mean you can cast away your patience and forgiveness to blow a gasket.  We are supposed to “pause and pray” and not necessarily for the person who is rubbing us wrong to get it right.  Sometimes we need to “pause and pray” for ourselves to have a better attitude and perspective.  The Holy Spirit will not let us go too far without revealing the error of our ways to us if we will listen and He does it at just the right time.  He even gives us the grace to overcome in any given situation if we are willing to receive it.  David knew what to ask for when he went the wrong direction, and we can follow his lead.  He said to God “You desire truth in the inner being; make me therefore to know wisdom in my inmost heart.” (AMPCE)  The bible teaches us in Psalm 84:11 that “no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly” (AMPCE) and wisdom is definitely a good thing.  Wisdom is not just understanding, but the ability to apply it.  The ability to know and walk the way God wants us to.  Don’t fail to ask for wisdom today.  It is through wisdom God reveals every good path.

For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.  He holds success in store for the upright, He is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for He guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path.  For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. ~Proverbs 2:6-11 (NIV)

Have you humbled yourself before the Lord and asked for His wisdom today? What has He shared with you?
