We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. ~Romans 12:6 (NIV)
It is very important that believers learn how to operate inside the gifts God has given to them as individuals. Nothing will steal your joy faster than trying to step into someone else’s "shoes" or gifting. Sure, we would all love to be master pianists or eloquent speakers but if we all had those gifts who would manage those talents and who would teach them? Romans 12:6 tells us God gives to each of us individually different gifts and then places His grace, which is His supernatural ability, on those gifts for us to do awesome things every day. In the verses following Romans 12:6 Paul writes “If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully." (NIV) What is it that you do well? What makes you feel accomplished at the end of the day? Sure, we can go out and make bucket loads of money, but money doesn’t satisfy the longing in our soul to give of ourselves. If the Spirit of the Lord lives on the inside of you then you have a longing to be all God has created for you to be and equal to that you have a strong desire to overcome the weakness born out of your soul. We are told in 1 Peter 2:1-3 “So get rid of your feelings of hatred. Don’t just pretend to be good! Be done with dishonesty and jealousy and talking about others behind their backs. Now that you realize how kind the Lord has been to you, put away all evil, deception, envy, and fraud. Long to grow up into the fullness of your salvation; cry for this as a baby cries for his milk.” (TLB) When was the last time you cried out to God to help you overcome the wrong things you were doing? We aren’t going to do that without a keen awareness of our sin. It shouldn’t take long for the Holy Spirit to convict you when you have a wrong thought, say a wrong word, or act outside of God’s perfect will. At that precise moment you need to confess, repent and draw near to God. It’s the pathway to spiritual rehydration and we are called to be a well of refreshment to those around us. Every step we take that is not infused with love for God and others is a pathway to spiritual dehydration. It weakens our walk and wrinkles up our spirit man.
You can be assured that whatever it is God has called you to do today He will equip you with His power and ability to get it done. His grace is ready and available. If He wants you to talk to someone about Jesus, He will give you the courage you need to say what you need to say. If He wants you to give, He will provide “seed for the sower”. If He wants you to show mercy, then He will give you the supernatural ability to overlook an offense and show mercy cheerfully. God is awesome and He provides for His children. Not just our daily bread, but a soft heart and a sound mind. It’s by His grace we are able to do His will and make a difference in the world around us. He says apart from Him we can do nothing but thank Jesus we never have to be apart from Him!
I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. ~John 15:5 (NIV)
