God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. ~2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV)
We hear a lot today about the importance of having a righteous consciousness versus a sin consciousness. While it is true that we will never live to our fullest potential and in God’s best without eliminating the continual awareness of our sin, it is extremely important that our righteous consciousness be grounded correctly. If we go around beating ourselves up about what we have done or are doing wrong every day, we lose our focus. The Lord says whom the Son sets free, is free indeed. We are free from the temptation of sin as we submit to God and resist the enemy and we are free from the punishment of sin by the blood of Jesus and the grace of God. The truth is, if our focus is on our sin, we are destined to repeat it. It’s in keeping close to the Lord that enables us to walk in victory. We are told in Isaiah 26:3 “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” (NIV) Is your mind steadfast? Are you trusting in God? Many of us have heard that “where the mind goes the man follows”. This is a true statement. Scripture teaches in Proverbs 23:7 “as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he…” (KJV) To be righteous conscious means to see yourself as God sees you. When God looks at you, He does not see your sins; He sees perfection. Jesus' sacrifice has covered your sin before God.
David expressed his understanding of what being grounded correctly in a righteous consciousness means in Psalm 19:14 stating “May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” (NIV) David acknowledged God as His rock and His redeemer. He understood that without God, he was nothing, nor was he capable of anything significant. David was a king and he understood that he was anointed for that position by God. Did you know you are anointed by God for every hat you are going to where today? Mom, Dad, Friend, Co-worker, Grandma, Cousin…every role you find yourself in you have been anointed to be excellent and victorious! David knew who he was and why he was where he was. Do you know who you are in Christ? Do you know for what purpose you live every day? In the midst of life, God knew David was going to make mistakes. That’s why he needed a redeemer. The same is true for us. God is our strength and God is our redeemer. He didn’t choose any of us because we were holy. He chose us to make us holy and all of our excellence, all of our capabilities, all of our self-control and disciplines come from Him. So, get your mind off what you haven’t got just right in your life today and start focusing on God and ask Him to help you get it right. God isn't holding what you haven't got right yet against you. Isn't that a freeing thought? We all have issues and sanctification is a process! God promises we are still perfect in His sight if we are trusting Jesus as our Savior. He is your rock and your redeemer.
Lord, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress. ~Isaiah 33:2 (NIV)
