Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before Him. ~1 Corinthians 1:26–29 (NIV)
All we need to do is take a look at some of the disciples Jesus chose and we can quickly see that God does not usually call people who seem to be the most qualified for a particular job. God prepares us in whatever way He chooses, not the way we choose. It may be formal training and it may not. Many great pastors never went to seminary, but no one can deny that they are great pastors. It was the anointing of God that qualified them and made them great. Just as it is the anointing of God that will make you great when you set out to do His will every morning! The Lord tells us in James 5:16 “The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.” (NIV) You and I are capable of doing the unimaginable and unbelievable because we have been restored to a right relationship with our Father in Christ Jesus. Our life can display the surpassing power of God rather than our own strength because we have open access to the throne room of God. We are taught in James 5:17-18 “Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its crops." (NIV) Elijah was a regular man born of flesh and blood, but his prayers were heard and answered, just like our prayers are heard and answered when they are offered in faith.
God will use everything in our lives to train us if we are willing to be trained. Many people have a great calling on their life, but they are too impatient to go through the preparation that is necessary to equip them for the job. They don’t want to take the time to study God’s word and find out what His will is for their life. They are too busy to find out what He has promised them because they are working so hard to figure out how to get it for themselves! The enemy will always make it seem like setting time aside to spend with the Lord is spinning our wheels. He wants us to do something so we can have the glory. But all the glory belongs to God, and He will get it in the end. Let God prepare you and use you. He has promised to equip you inside and out for every good work, but there will be a lot of training, trusting, and time involved. Trust in Him today to teach and equip you to do everything He has called you to do in His time.
Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing His will, and may He work in us what is pleasing to Him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. ~Hebrews 13:20-21 (NIV)
