And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. ~John 8:32 (NLT)
Truth always precedes change. Is there something you would like to change about yourself or the way you live? It is almost impossible to see the need for change or to know how to change if we don’t face the truth about where we are today. Change is a process and admitting the truth about ourselves and/or our circumstances is usually the hardest part of moving in a different direction. God’s word is truth. Scripture tells us in Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (NIV) God’s word sheds light on our lives. It enlightens us to the truth and gives us a desire for change. We are more than capable of walking out the purposes and destiny God has planned for our lives because we have become acquainted with God through His Spirit and His word. Scripture teaches that we have the mind of Christ and Jesus said His sheep hear His voice. Do you hear God’s voice? We all can when we open His word and read it! Our bible is the very word of God. It says if we have the Holy Spirit, then we have insight into all spiritual truths. It is those very truths that enable us to see the enemy’s tactics. When we see through his lies and deceptions and open our eyes to God’s truth, we are able shake of the chains that hold us back from living by the grace of God and going from victory to victory in this life.
When we make up our minds to change, the enemy comes along immediately bringing guilt, condemnation, and “smokescreens” to lure us off the pathway of discovering our destiny. The pathway to discovering our destiny is the word of God. The enemy comes against the word by keeping us distracted and if we purpose in our hearts to fill them with the word of God then the enemy comes against our character. He is a master at telling us everything that is wrong with us and everything we have done wrong. That is because he does not want to see us make progress. But 1 John 1:9 tells us “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (NIV) Another roadblock to watch for in our quest for change is excuses; they will stop us cold in our tracks. It has been said we should never give or take an excuse, yet we see them around us all the time. Are you making excuses? Do you have a good “reason” for not being committed to God’s plan for your life? That commitment begins with committing God’s word to your heart. If you want to see successful change in your life you cannot make excuses. Ask God to reveal to you the truth and then ask Him to help you admit the truth to yourself. We can endure the pain of discipline, or we can endure the pain of regret, but one thing is for sure…there is going to be some pain! Remember that when God shows you the truth, it might hurt a little bit at first to confess you are wrong and make the changes you need to get on the right track, but just look at that pain as healing pain that will bring new levels of freedom and times of refreshing into your life.
So repent (change your mind and purpose); turn around and return [to God], that your sins may be erased (blotted out, wiped clean), that times of refreshing (of recovering from the effects of heat, of reviving with fresh air) may come from the presence of the Lord; ~Acts 3:19 (AMPCE)
