Go be a blessing today!

I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. ~Genesis 12:2 (NIV)

Just as God made Abraham a blessing to others, He wants to make us a blessing to others as well.  Notice God did not put the cart before the horse.  He didn’t say, Abraham go out and give until you are empty, and then I will refill.   Although there are times in the word of God where giving out of our poverty is commended, such as the widow’s mite, God’s promise to Abraham was to make Him into a great nation and bless Him.  America is a great nation.  We are known for our prosperity, freedom and more importantly we are known to be blessed by God Almighty.  Because we are a great nation, we are able to be a blessing to other nations around us.  We are able to help them and defend them, but we wouldn’t be able to do any of that if God hadn't made us a great nation first.  God knows we can’t give what we don’t have that's why He told Abraham I will bless you and you will bless others.  The Lord tells us in Psalm 57:10 that He owns the cattle on a thousand hills and the truth is, He is keeping His cattle in our barns!  Everything we are and everything we have has come from God and ultimately belongs to God.  He tells us to be a blessing to others and let Him worry about blessing us.  Many times, we get that backwards and it clogs up the pipes.  Everyone knows a clogged pipe holds water that will quickly become stagnant.  Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (NIV) What makes you happier, giving or receiving?  Jesus said it is more blessed to give than to receive.  Have you experienced that kind of blessing?  Extravagant givers are the happiest people you will ever meet because they hold on to this world loosely.  When we learn to hold on to this world loosely, we are able to hold on to our peace much more tightly.

Far too often we want to bless ourselves and pray and ask God to take care of the needs of those around us.  Lord knows God can get the blessings to us, but can He get them through us?  One thing you can be sure of is if you are able to identify a need and you have the resources to meet it, then there is a pretty good chance you were the person God called to administer that blessing.  In Philippians 2:13 the Lord tells us “Not in your own strength, for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in you [energizing and creating in you the power and desire], both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight.” (AMPCE)  That scripture can really take a load off when we are trying to overthink a situation.  We don’t have to be rich to possess a generous spirit.  We just have to be ready when God tugs on our heart strings.  Nothing will bless your heart like letting God use you to be a blessing to someone.  Take an inventory of the resources God has given you and go be a blessing with them today!

The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to Him. ~Psalm 24:1 (NLT)
