God wants us to seek wisdom. He tells us in Proverbs 4:5 “Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them.” (NIV) God’s wisdom is in His word. We have to feed God’s wisdom to our mind until it gets down into our heart before we can act on it and live as wise men and women. It’s only when we have the wisdom of God that we can make the most of every opportunity. To walk in wisdom enables us to be mindful of our time and opportunities. The Message bible translation puts it this way: “So watch your step. Use your head. Make the most of every chance you get.” (MSG) Do you feel like you are making the most of the time you have and every chance you get? Or have you over committed yourself in one area of your life to the point of rendering you unproductive in many others? When God tell us to live as wise people, making the most of every opportunity, He means we are to budget our time just as we would our money or any other resource. Budgeting our time includes setting aside time for our rest and rejuvenation. It even means taking time to dream! Sometimes regrouping needs to be at the top of our priority list. This is especially true if the majority of our time is spent on activities that wear us out physically or even mentally. Difficult relationships can also drain our emotional energy tank causing us to become difficult people living fruitless lives.
You don’t have to be wasting your time to not be making the most of your time. There is a big difference between living on purpose and just getting through the day. The term “buying the opportunity” is a metaphor taken from merchants and traders who diligently observed and improved their seasons for trade by living as wise men and women and making the most of every prospect. We are not able to buy more time, but we are able to make the most of our time by seeking God’s wisdom and being good stewards of everything the Lord has given us. Only He can give us insight, only He can give us favor, only He can see the doors of opportunity tomorrow will bring and help us to prepare for them. Be careful of your time, it’s a gift from the Lord and He expects you to use it intelligently. Every minute you spend is an investment. What are you investing your most precious, nonrenewable resource in? Seek God's wisdom in His word and let Him teach you to invest your time instead of just spending it. The psalmist knew the Lord well and what spending time with God would produce in His life. He tells us throughout the book to seek the Lord, call on the Lord, count on the Lord and even to rest in the Lord. We have to be able to trust in the Lord before we can do any of the above. But when we do trust in the Lord, He will teach us everything we need to know to live a fulfilled and victorious life. If you aren’t living that kind of life, then it is time to open your bible and get into God’s word. Let Him teach you what is best for you every minute! He said He created you in His image. He wants you to be wise and successful!
